Man rescued from grain bin in Ohio

Firefighters used specialized equipment to free victim buried chest-deep in corn at Medina facility Wednesday afternoon.

WOIO's Nikki Gasiewski and Gray News staff reported that the Medina, Ohio, fire department responded to a grain bin emergency Wednesday after receiving reports of a trapped worker. Firefighters discovered the man alert and oriented but buried up to his chest in corn.

Initial attempts to dig the victim out proved ineffective as grain continuously filled the excavated space. The weight of surrounding corn prevented the man from moving independently, according to department officials.

Engine 2 crews entered through a side door and deployed a sling system to prevent further engulfment. Paramedics utilized a grain rescue sleeve during treatment, allowing controlled corn removal around the victim.
