WBOC reported that Mountaire Farms partnered with Delaware’s Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company to bring grain safety training directly to Delmarva farmers. The hands-on event let participants experience grain engulfment simulations and practice rescue techniques using equipment modeled after emergency response tools.
Training instructor Bill Harp noted that 70% of grain engulfment incidents happen on family farms versus 30% in commercial settings. Farmer Jay Baxter said the training opened his eyes to dangers he faces daily.
Mountaire Cares Director Zach Evans said the company chose an offsite location to make the training more accessible to local farmers. The event follows a fatal grain incident in April and a recent accident in Bridgeville.
