Wheat exports hit marketing-year high in August

U.S. wheat shipments reached their highest level of the marketing year while corn sales showed mixed results during the week of Aug. 7-13.

U.S. wheat exports climbed to 524,300 metric tons during the week ending Aug. 13, marking a marketing-year high and representing a 7% increase from the previous week and a 46% jump from the prior four-week average, according to the Foreign Agricultural Service’s weekly export report.

Japan led wheat destinations with 159,300 MT, followed by Mexico at 131,600 MT, Indonesia at 75,400 MT, Thailand at 60,300 MT, and South Korea at 24,200 MT.

Net wheat sales for the 2026/2027 marketing year totaled 393,700 MT, up 54% from the previous week and 40% from the four-week average. Mexico topped the list of buyers with 105,000 MT, while Taiwan purchased 97,200 MT and Thailand bought 61,200 MT. Italy and South Korea rounded out the top five with 29,300 MT and 24,700 MT, respectively. Japan reduced its purchases by 5,700 MT.

Corn showed a different pattern. Net sales for 2025/2026 dropped 43% from the previous week to 232,900 MT, falling 24% below the four-week average. Japan led purchases at 192,700 MT, which included 239,300 MT switched from unknown destinations and decreases of 62,900 MT. Spain bought 121,200 MT, Mexico purchased 85,900 MT, the Netherlands took 70,300 MT, and Portugal acquired 65,900 MT.

For the 2026/2027 marketing year, corn net sales reached 816,100 MT. Mexico led with 305,400 MT, followed by Japan at 184,000 MT, unknown destinations at 121,600 MT, Taiwan at 74,500 MT, and Colombia at 61,400 MT. Spain reduced its orders by 62,000 MT.

Corn exports totaled 1,975,500 MT, up 12% from the previous week and 13% from the four-week average. Mexico received the largest share at 709,800 MT, with Japan taking 559,700 MT, Spain 151,700 MT, Colombia 149,000 MT, and Portugal 73,900 MT.

Barley activity remained minimal, with total net sales of just 400 MT for 2026/2027, all destined for Canada. Exports reached 1,700 MT, also to Canada.

Sorghum net sales for 2025/2026 totaled 7,700 MT, up noticeably from the previous week and 19% above the four-week average. Mexico accounted for 7,400 MT and China for 200 MT. For 2026/2027, total net sales of 13,500 MT went to China.

Sorghum exports dropped sharply to 8,300 MT, down 87% from the previous week and 88% from the four-week average. Mexico received 7,400 MT and China took 800 MT.

Rice net sales for 2026/2027 reached 38,800 MT. Mexico led with 30,600 MT, followed by Guatemala at 9,900 MT (which included 11,000 MT switched from unknown destinations and decreases of 1,100 MT), South Korea at 5,600 MT, Canada at 1,500 MT, and Jordan at 1,500 MT. Unknown destinations saw reductions of 11,000 MT.

Rice exports totaled 35,100 MT, with Japan receiving 13,000 MT, Guatemala 9,900 MT, Mexico 4,100 MT, Canada 2,500 MT, and South Korea 1,900 MT.
