U.S. rough rice stocks have increased 35 percent compared to last year, according to a report released August 20 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Total rough rice stored in all positions on August 1, 2025 reached 44.6 million hundredweight (cwt), up from 32.9 million cwt on August 1, 2024. The report shows on-farm storage accounted for 5.91 million cwt, while off-farm stocks totaled 38.7 million cwt.
Long grain varieties represented the majority of rough rice stocks at 73 percent, while medium grain accounted for 26 percent and short grain varieties made up the remaining 1 percent.
Milled rice stocks also saw a significant increase, totaling 6.48 million cwt, up 34 percent from the previous year. These stocks were comprised of 4.52 million cwt of whole kernel rice and 1.96 million cwt of second heads, screenings, and brewers rice.
Arkansas led all states with 26.85 million cwt of rough rice in storage, followed by California with 10.06 million cwt. Other significant state holdings included Louisiana (3.41 million cwt), Missouri (1.83 million cwt), and Texas (1.47 million cwt).
The report is based on separate surveys conducted during the first two weeks of August to obtain on-farm and off-farm estimates, with all known rice storage facilities included in the census of off-farm stocks.
