The fire broke out the morning of July 10 at Woody’s Feed & Grain, prompting a response from nearly a dozen fire departments across western North Dakota. Local police, county sheriffs and state highway patrol provided traffic control and support during the operation.
The business will remain closed indefinitely as owners assess the damage. Woody’s Feed & Grain has served farming and ranching operations throughout the region for years, providing feed, supplies and expertise to agricultural producers.
Matt and Heather Buckman own the store. Heather began working at the business 18 years ago after graduating from high school in nearby Belfield. She worked her way from secretary to manager before purchasing the business in 2023, turning what started as an entry-level job into ownership of an operation that had become central to her life and the local agricultural economy.
The couple also operates a trucking business and have three children.
The fire left Woody’s employees without work. Neighboring businesses also lost revenue when authorities closed surrounding streets during firefighting operations, preventing customers and workers from accessing the area.
Recovery efforts face a long road ahead. Authorities warned the public to stay away from the damaged structure, citing safety concerns. The building remains unstable, and workers periodically access the site to assess conditions and plan cleanup operations.
Officials asked residents not to approach the property or photograph the damage, even when workers are present. They noted that public cooperation is necessary to allow recovery teams to operate safely.
The Buckmans thanked the community for its response, noting the volume of messages, calls and offers of assistance they received. They asked for continued patience as the family, employees and affected neighboring businesses navigate the aftermath.
“Every message, phone call, and act of kindness has meant the world to the family and the entire Woody’s team,” the business said in a statement.
