BASF has announced the development of InVigor Gold, a new canola seed technology designed to unlock the full genetic potential of canola-quality Brassica juncea in new areas of Canada and the United States. The innovation is expected to feature LibertyLink herbicide tolerance, inherent pod shatter resistance and strong blackleg disease resistance.
InVigor Gold, slated for U.S. release in 2027 pending regulatory approval, is the result of decades of research and development by BASF scientists. The new hybrid builds on BASF's market-leading InVigor canola portfolio, known for its top-yielding performance.
Bryan Perry, Head of U.S. Seeds and Traits for BASF, said, "InVigor Gold will unlock the full genetic potential of canola in new areas and help farmers improve yield performance through better tolerance to heat as compared to traditional canola hybrids."
In BASF trials across 23 locations from 2022 through 2024 in Canada's brown soil zone and the Northern Great Plains, InVigor Gold outyielded traditional canola by an average of 8%. The hybrid's heat tolerance and yield stability are expected to allow cultivation in hotter, drier environments and lower organic soils compared to other canola hybrids.
Montana Governor Greg Gianforte praised the innovation, stating, "As demand continues to rise, innovation and the tireless work of Montana farmers will continue to move the agriculture industry forward. I'm grateful for BASF and their shared commitment to innovation."
InVigor Gold is anticipated to be the first LibertyLink-tolerant, canola-quality, yellow-seeded canola projected to allow delivery to the same elevator and processing facilities as traditional canola. The product is expected to be available in Canada later this decade or early in the next, pending regulatory approval.
