USGBC helps advance aquafeed training for Middle East and North Africa

Partnership promotes use of U.S. corn co-products to boost aquaculture efficiency and export opportunities.

The U.S. Grains & BioProducts Council (USGBC) recently held an aquaculture training session for stakeholders from Turkey, Egypt, Oman and Tunisia. USGBC Deputy Regional Director for Africa Mohamed Salah Bouthout (sixth from right) oversaw the program at Aydin Adnan Menderes University (ADU).

The U.S. Grains & Bioproducts Council (USGBC) and Aydin Adnan Menderes University (ADU) recently co-hosted a second aquaculture training and the first international session for participants from the Middle East and North Africa. The program focused on improving aquafeed manufacturing and promoting U.S. corn co-products such as distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and corn fermented protein (CFP).

USGBC’s Mohamed Salah Bouthour and Ibrahim Sirtioglu led the training, which combined expert lectures with hands-on sessions covering sourcing, storage, and application of corn co-products. ADU shared feeding trial results on rainbow trout and marine fish, showing improved feed conversion ratios and reduced production costs using U.S. DDGS.

Attendees from Turkey, Egypt, Oman, and Tunisia explored ways to optimize feed formulas and discussed the growing demand for seafood in regional and global markets. The partnership aims to expand the use of U.S. corn co-products in aquafeed, opening new export opportunities.

“With positive trial results, the Council plans to promote this data to help the private sector learn and grow,” Bouthour said. He added that future trainings will engage more end-users across Africa and the Middle East to advance aquaculture production.
