Several dozen century-old grain silos at Viterra’s Pacific Port Terminal are coming down, to the alarm of nearby residents because of the hazardous materials involved, reports the Vancouver Sun.
Viterra’s PAC3 grain elevator, which comprises 42 silo, was built in 1918, but was shut down in 2010 because of structural deterioration and increasing operating costs, according to the grain-shipping company.
Among the hazards demolition crews will encounter are PCBs, asbestos, mercury and 70,000 square feet of droppings from and carcasses of rodents and birds, according to an environmental assessment.
