NCGA, Ag Data Transparent release transparency principles for agricultural carbon programs

Industry-backed initiative aims to standardize transparency expectations as carbon programs compete for farmer participation.

The National Corn Growers Association and Ag Data Transparent have released “Transparency Principles for Ag Carbon” through the Ag Carbon Transparent Project, a joint initiative they say is meant to bring clarity to farmers evaluating carbon programs. The release comes as agricultural carbon programs continue to seek participation from producers, with farmers weighing whether to enroll.

NCGA said the project was announced last summer by the association and Ag Data Transparent and has attracted industry support. The organizations are framing the principles as a set of transparency expectations for programs operating in agricultural carbon markets and related farm-data use.

The stated goal is practical: improve the quality and consistency of information farmers rely on when comparing programs and making enrollment decisions. If adopted, the principles could increase pressure on carbon program operators to provide clearer information as they recruit farmers and compete for acres.

NCGA did not provide details in the captured announcement about how the principles will be implemented or enforced, or how participation will be governed. The group also did not publish, in the captured content, the full list and wording of the principles.
