The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has announced the launch of its new online professional development course, AFIA 600: Designing, Implementing and Documenting an Animal Food Safety Program, set to run from Nov. 12 through Dec. 17. Tailored for industry professionals, the course aims to deepen participants' understanding of animal food safety standards, regulations, and the Safe Feed/Safe Food (SF/SF) certification program.

“This course is a great resource for professionals committed to ensuring the safety and quality of their animal food products and bolstering a food safety culture within their facilities,” said Paul Davis, Ph.D., AFIA’s director of quality, animal food safety, and education. “We developed this program to meet the demand for a foundational course that equips professionals with the tools to design effective safety programs, ensuring they are well-prepared to pursue certifications like Preventive Controls Qualified Individual and SF/SF certification.”

The self-guided course will consist of nine webinar-style modules covering key topics such as the Food Safety Modernization Act’s (FSMA) current good manufacturing practices, quality and food safety management systems, new product development, personnel training, and infrastructure management. It is designed for feed and pet food employees interested in understanding FSMA rules, regulations, and becoming a designated Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI).

Participants can work through the modules at their own pace during the five-week course and will have access to resources for establishing and maintaining a comprehensive safety and quality management system. Upon completion, participants can request a certificate of participation.
