Growth Energy celebrates milestone in expanding E15 and E85 fuel access

This milestone will generate an additional 100 million gallons of bioethanol demand annually.

Today, Growth Energy, the nation’s largest biofuel trade association, announced a major achievement in expanding access to higher biofuel blends like E15 and E85, celebrating the completion of the fifth and final round of applications for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program (HBIIP).

Growth Energy played a key role in facilitating 54% of grant applications in the HBIIP’s five rounds, leading to 1,173 new retail sites adding higher bioethanol-blended fuels. With these installations, Growth Energy’s retail partners will generate an additional 100 million gallons of bioethanol demand annually. Since 2011, when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Growth Energy’s waiver request allowing the sale of E15 in vehicles made in 2001 or newer, the organization has driven more than $1 billion in investments in new biofuels infrastructure.

“Over the past few summers, E15 has been saving drivers 10 to 30 cents per gallon, and our leaders in Congress are rallying bipartisan support to make those savings a permanent, year-round feature of the marketplace,” said Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor. “With every new pump that offers E15, we’re increasing American energy security, reducing emissions, and holding down prices for hardworking families.”

The success of the HBIIP program underscores the growing demand for more affordable, lower-carbon fuel options among both retailers and consumers, according to Growth Energy. The association will continue to push for expanding bioethanol infrastructure across the nation to ensure more drivers have access to cleaner, more cost-effective fuel options.

“We invite drivers from all across Florida, Texas, and Georgia to visit one of our locations that offers E15 and try it out for themselves,” said Steve Walk, COO of Protec Fuel, one of Growth Energy’s retail partners. “This is a fuel option that’s compatible with 96% of the cars on the road, better for the environment, and easier on their wallets. We’re excited to see what the future holds for our stores and their customers as they offer this more affordable fuel option, and we thank the team at Growth Energy for their support throughout the grant process—without them, this wouldn’t have been possible.”

As a result of the USDA’s HBIIP program and Growth Energy’s efforts, American consumers now have greater access to cleaner-burning, cost-lowering biofuels. Growth Energy plans to build on this momentum to further expand the availability of bioethanol-blended fuels across the U.S. and support the transition to more sustainable energy solutions.
