Demolition of a damaged grain elevator in South Sioux City, NE, could begin later this week, the city's fire chief said Tuesday.
The Sioux City Journal reports once demolition begins, officials will be better able to determine when residents evacuated from 26 houses near the elevator might be able to return to their homes.
The owners of the Andersen Farms elevator have signed a contract with Terminal Solutions, of Radcliffe, IA.
Corn inside the elevator has continued to smolder since the May 29 explosion, and a semitrailer that was loading grain at the time of the explosion also remains inside the elevator.
