A CHS Midwest Cooperatives grain storage bin showing signs of exterior strain during a filling operation prompted an evacuation of downtown Philip, SD, Friday morning, reports News Center 1.
According to a statement by CHS Midwest Cooperative, employees noticed a buckling of the exterior of one of the grain storage bins at the city’s landmark grain elevator facility.
After authorities were notified, officials with Haakon County Emergency Management and the more than 10 responding agencies decided the grain storage bin posed a collapse and explosion hazard. Downtown Philip was then evacuated as a precaution.
CHS Midwest Cooperatives carefully removed wheat from the silo Friday afternoon, and expected the situation to be stabilized by evening.
