Illinois officials are highlighting the dangers of grain bin accidents as the state recognizes Grain Bin Safety Week from February 21 to 27.
The Illinois Department of Labor is partnering with emergency responders to raise awareness about prevention and rescue techniques during a season when farmers frequently transport grain from storage.
“During the busiest time of transporting grain out of storage bins, it’s important to make sure farmers are alert of the dangers of entrapment and engulfment,” said IDOL Director Hugo Chaviano.
Illinois ranks second nationally for grain bin accidents and fatalities, with 70% of incidents occurring on family farms, which make up 97% of the state’s agricultural industry.
“To decrease grain bin accidents in our state, we need to continue our efforts of raising awareness, educating the public and offering training resources,” Chaviano said.
The department demonstrated safety techniques at last year’s State Fair in partnership with the Illinois Fire Services Institute.
