Grain silos in Ukraine's second biggest port, Mykolaiv, were hit by Russian shelling of the city on August 30, causing a fire that was still burning the next day, Ukraine's emergencies service said.
On its Facebook page, the emergencies services published photos showing holes in the metal roofs of at least two silos and fire brigades pouring water on damaged facilities. A 200-square-meter area had been affected, it said, without giving any further details.
Not the first time grain infrastructure has been hit
According to reports, there are several major grain terminals in Mykolaiv, and some have already come under attack during the Russian invasion.
In June, rocket strikes damaged terminals in Mykolaiv owned by agricultural traders Viterra and Bunge Ltd.
Over 1.5 million tonnes of grain now exported from Ukrainian
More than 1.5 million tonnes of grain and other foodstuffs have already been exported from three Ukrainian ports, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his nightly video address.
On August 30, six ships carrying 183,000 tonnes of Ukrainian agricultural products departed from the ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Pivdenny. All possible through an agreement reached in July between Ukraine and Russia through the mediation of Türkiye and the United Nations.
"We are also restoring the relevant connections with the countries of the Arabian Peninsula - almost 40,000 tonnes of wheat are headed to Yemen," said Zelensky.
"In general, more than 1.5 million tonnes of our food have already been exported by sea from the three ports that became operational thanks to the grain export initiative."
