The U.S. Senate confirmed Karen Hedlund on Aug. 7 to a second term on the Surface Transportation Board, a move the National Grain and Feed Association praised as important for the freight rail industry.
Hedlund’s new term runs through Dec. 31, 2030. She first joined the board in January 2022 and served as vice chairman in 2023 and 2024.
“Karen Hedlund has been a thoughtful, experienced, and effective member of the Board during a critical period for the freight rail industry,” said Michael Seyfert, NGFA president and CEO.
The STB oversees freight rail operations and works to maintain a competitive transportation system. Hedlund helped the board navigate significant rail service challenges during her first term, according to the association.
Before joining the STB, Hedlund spent years in senior transportation policy roles. She served as deputy administrator and chief counsel of the Federal Railroad Administration from 2010 to 2014, and as chief counsel of the Federal Highway Administration from 2009 to 2010, both during the Obama administration.
She also advised government agencies and private investors on rail and infrastructure projects, working with law firms in Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington.
“At a time when the Board is considering matters with long-term implications for freight transportation and the U.S. economy, experienced leadership is essential,” Seyfert said.
Hedlund holds degrees from Harvard University and Georgetown University Law Center. She lives in Colorado near her two children and three grandchildren, who live in Brooklyn.
