The U.S. ethanol industry has achieved a significant milestone in 2024, with exports already surpassing the previous annual record set in 2018. According to data released by the Census Bureau, U.S. ethanol exports totaled 1.72 billion gallons through November, exceeding the 2018 record of 1.67 billion gallons. With December data still to come, exports are projected to approach 1.9 billion gallons for the full calendar year, representing approximately 12% of U.S. ethanol production.

Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) President and CEO Geoff Cooper highlighted the importance of this achievement, stating, "Growth in the export market was a big bright spot for the U.S. ethanol industry in 2024. Record exports not only highlight the growing global demand for sustainable energy solutions, but also underscore the vital role trade plays in strengthening the American energy sector, driving innovation, and supporting economic growth."

Key points from the export data include:

  1. Canada emerged as the top destination, accounting for over one-third of total shipments with more than 600 million gallons through November.
  2. Other major destinations included the United Kingdom, India, the European Union, and Colombia.
  3. Brazil, previously a top market, fell out of the top 10 destinations due to punitive tariffs.
  4. Exports of distillers grains, a co-product of ethanol production, are expected to reach 12 million metric tons annually for only the second time in history.

Cooper emphasized the need for continued market access, stating, "Moving forward, it is crucially important that U.S. ethanol producers maintain free and fair access to global markets for both renewable fuel and co-products like distillers grains. In 2025, open markets need to stay open, and shuttered markets need to be unlocked."

The RFA plans to continue working with partners to break down trade barriers, expand export opportunities, and educate global consumers on the benefits of low-carbon renewable fuels. This record-breaking year for ethanol exports demonstrates the growing international demand for sustainable energy solutions and the U.S. ethanol industry's capacity to meet that demand.
