USDA reports shifts in 2025 crop planting intentions

Corn acreage up, while soybeans, wheat and cotton see declines.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service released its Prospective Plantings report on March 31, 2025, revealing significant shifts in farmers' planting intentions for major crops.

Corn planted area for 2025 is estimated at 95.3 million acres, a 5% increase from last year. This uptick is expected in 40 of the 48 estimating states.

Soybean acreage is projected to decline 4% to 83.5 million acres, with 23 of 29 estimating states reporting decreases or no change.

All wheat planted area is estimated at 45.4 million acres, down 2% from 2024 and potentially the second-lowest on record since 1919. Winter wheat accounts for 33.3 million acres of this total, while spring wheat is expected to cover 10.0 million acres, a 6% decrease from 2024.

Cotton sees the most significant decline, with all cotton planted area estimated at 9.87 million acres, a 12% drop from last year. Upland cotton accounts for 9.71 million acres of this total.
