The American Feed Industry Association announced Tuesday that Joel G. Newman, former president and CEO, has been named the 2026 AFIA Distinguished Service Award recipient in recognition of his decades-long leadership and lasting contributions to the animal food industry.
Fifteen years of transformational leadership
Newman retired in 2019 after serving 15 years as AFIA’s president and CEO, becoming the seventh individual to hold the role in the association’s more than 100-year history. He joined AFIA in September 2004 and officially assumed the leadership position in January 2005.
During his tenure, Newman led the association through significant transformation and growth, navigating major regulatory changes and strengthening key industry partnerships. He oversaw AFIA’s response to the Food Safety Modernization Act and strengthened its partnership with the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association to support the International Production and Processing Expo.
“Joel’s calm, thoughtful leadership helped shape the AFIA into the strong, forward-looking organization it is today,” said Dan Meagher, president and CEO of Novus International and AFIA outgoing Board chair. “His ability to listen, build consensus and provide steady direction during times of change left a lasting impact on the association and the broader animal food industry.”
International trade expertise
Newman represented AFIA on international trade issues through his service on the International Feed Industry Federation board of directors for several terms, including as chair twice. In 2005, he was appointed by former Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns to the Agricultural Trade Advisory Committee for Grains, Feed and Oilseeds.
Newman joins 40 prior recipients of this honor recognizing professionals who have significantly impacted the animal food sector.
