The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) praised Congress on Feb. 3 for passing the fiscal year funding package that extends the authorization of the U.S. Grain Standards Act (USGSA) through Sept. 30, 2026. The extension provides crucial continuity for the federal grain inspection and weighing system, which supports the integrity and reliability of the U.S. grain marketing system.

NGFA President and CEO Mike Seyfert thanked congressional leaders from both parties, including House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-Pa.) and Ranking Member Angie Craig (D-Minn.), as well as Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman (R-Ark.) and Ranking Member Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), for their attention to this issue.

“This extension is an important step that helps avoid uncertainty for the grain trade and reinforces confidence in U.S. grain quality and inspection services,” Seyfert said.

While welcoming the temporary extension, NGFA emphasized the need for Congress to quickly enact a full five-year reauthorization of the USGSA. A longer-term reauthorization would provide greater stability, enable operational improvements, and allow the Federal Grain Inspection Service to modernize and better serve a rapidly evolving marketplace.

NGFA has consistently supported bipartisan reauthorization efforts that preserve the core strengths of the USGSA and provide the U.S. Department of Agriculture with the certainty needed to administer the program effectively.

“We urge Congress to move quickly to enact a full five-year reauthorization,” Seyfert added. “Providing long-term certainty is essential to maintaining the competitiveness, credibility, and reliability of U.S. grain in the global market.”
