The U.S. Grains & BioProducts Council (USGBC) recently guided a group of Japanese business journalists through the U.S. biofuel value chain, highlighting ethanol’s application as a feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) via alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) technology.
The eight-member delegation began in Bismarck, North Dakota, with a visit to Direct Ag Farm to learn about corn growing practices. They toured a Gevo ethanol plant, engaging with staff about converting feed into fuel.
In Illinois, the group met with Illinois Corn representatives who emphasized the role of checkoffs in supporting farmers and the economic benefits of ethanol. They also visited One Earth Energy and the University of Illinois-Chicago to explore biofuel production and cutting-edge research in energy and transportation.
The tour concluded in Washington, D.C., where the journalists met with USGBC leadership, the Renewable Fuels Association, and Airlines for America.
“As Japan looks to expand its use of SAF, building consumer confidence will be critical,” said Tommy Hamamoto, USGBC director in Japan. “The team now better understands how U.S. corn is grown and how bioethanol is refined to high standards, supporting environmental and human health goals.”
