After days of odor complaints, Port Houston officials discovered a smoldering fire inside a Hansen Mueller grain elevator near Clinton Drive and McCarty Street in Houston on December 8.

In a statement, Port Houston said the fire is under control and did not spread beyond the silo where it started. Port Houston fire crews and environmental officials are monitoring air quality levels.

According to reports, over several days last week, residents in the area reported lingering smoke and a strong odor in the air. In response to the complaints, the port previously confirmed a grain elevator was being torn down at one of their general cargo terminals. On Friday evening, however, they discovered the fire.

The port has shut down all operations at the grain elevator while Hansen Mueller contractors work to remove the impacted grain from the silo.
