The cat food and treats space is coming into its own as more and more pet food manufacturers realize that cat lovers are looking for a lot of the same things as their canine-loving counterparts: The best nutrition and plenty of options to meet their pet’s needs. There’s plenty of opportunity there, as cats are living longer than ever; it’s not uncommon these days for domestic cats to live well into their late teens or even their 20s. “Over the years, cat food trends and nutrition started to shift when people began seeing their pets as members of the family,” said John Kampeter, vice president of marketing and sales for Diamond Pet Foods. “As people’s relationships with pets has evolved, so has the type of food pet parents are seeking. [We’re seeing] a greater interest in specialized cat food that provides nutrition for cats at various life stages with different dietary needs and activity levels.”
