US agricultural exports show mixed performance across commodities

The latest U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Export Sales Report for the period of January 3-9, 2025, reveals a varied landscape across agricultural commodities. Key highlights include:

  1. Wheat exports surge:

    • Net sales of 513,400 metric tons (MT) for 2024/2025, up 55% from the prior 4-week average
    • Major buyers: South Korea (131,800 MT), Taiwan (114,700 MT), and Mexico (43,400 MT)
  2. Corn sales rebound:

    • Net sales of 1,024,200 MT for 2024/2025, up significantly from the previous week
    • Japan leads purchases with 281,300 MT, followed by South Korea (281,200 MT) and Mexico (234,400 MT)
    • Exports hit a marketing-year high of 1,484,300 MT
  3. Soybean meal hits low point:

    • Net sales of 144,400 MT for 2024/2025 mark a marketing-year low
    • Down 42% from the prior 4-week average
    • Morocco emerges as top buyer with 33,900 MT
  4. Cotton sales strengthen:

    • Upland cotton net sales of 316,200 running bales (RB) for 2024/2025, up 71% from the prior 4-week average
    • Turkey leads purchases with 102,100 RB, followed by Vietnam (79,400 RB)
  5. Livestock sector shows promise:

    • Beef net sales of 9,700 MT for 2025, with Japan (3,600 MT) and China (3,500 MT) as top buyers
    • Pork net sales reach 30,300 MT for 2025, led by Mexico (11,700 MT) and South Korea (5,000 MT)
