KRTV’s Tom Wylie reported on an interesting way to honor the old wooden grain elevators that dot the countryside. A Montana craftsman is taking apart a century-old grain elevator in Hinsdale, board by board, to give the wood new life. Paul Van Marter has do so before, relocating to each new work site and, working mostly alone, spends two to three years dismantling each structure. He removes nails and prepares the lumber for flooring, cabinets, trim and fencing. The Hinsdale elevator, standing since at least 1920, is his 10th project. Van Marter started after a customer showed him the quality of century-old wood. He said many old elevators can no longer handle modern farm equipment, and he’s saving them from destruction.
