CBC News reported that a Saskatchewan farmer is trying to sell or donate a grain elevator before it is demolished.
The owner wants to transfer the structure, described as a "classic symbol of prairie life," to a private buyer, nonprofit, municipality or heritage group prepared to preserve it.
Keeping an elevator standing takes ongoing maintenance, safety oversight and an owner willing to assume the obligations tied to an aging industrial structure. Prairie elevators were built for a grain-handling system that has changed as logistics consolidated and commercial routes shifted, and older wooden structures lost their original role.
If no buyer or recipient organization steps forward with a workable plan, the elevator comes down.
