CBS News Chicago's Sabrina Franza reported that demolition equipment stood ready Monday at the historic Damen Silos as the city prepared to take down the century-old grain elevators despite preservationists' opposition.

The structures, dating back to 1906 and abandoned since 1977, will be gradually demolished after owner Michael Tadin Jr. purchased the site in 2022 for $6.5 million.

"It's a sad day," said Kate Eakin of the McKinley Park Development Council.

City officials promised environmental monitoring throughout the process, expected to continue until November.

Community groups had proposed converting the 23-acre property into public space. Tadin hasn't disclosed future plans for the site.
