The Republican Eagle staff reported that emergency responders contained a crude corn oil spill Monday afternoon after 3,000 to 3,500 gallons leaked from a barge into the Mississippi River near Archer Daniels Midland’s Red Wing, Minnesota, facility.

Red Wing Fire Department crews arrived to find ADM personnel had already deployed initial containment booms around the barge. Additional booms were placed downriver by the emergency response group and fire department.

Clean Harbors, an environmental services company contracted by ADM, has assumed cleanup responsibilities. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and county emergency management are monitoring the remediation process.

Authorities emphasized no immediate public health risk exists, though the spill could impact local aquatic ecosystems. The cause remains under investigation.
