Researchers at Michigan State University and Chungnam National University say they have developed a system that is capable of providing real-time analysis of animal feed or ingredients—at least with respect to key metrics such as moisture content, crude protein and fiber.
Their system uses short-wave infrared hyperspectral cameras to analyze the nutritional content of feed components as they pass under the camera. Unlike near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR), which can only analyze the content of a single sample, the hyperspectral cameras could be mounted above a conveyor belt for continuous analysis, according to Daniel Uyeh, an assistant professor of agricultural engineering at Michigan State University.
