US cattle on feed up 1 percent from last year

August placements totaled 1.98 million head while fed cattle marketings reached 1.82 million, a 4% drop.

As of September 1, 2024, the number of cattle and calves on feed in U.S. feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head reached 11.2 million, marking a 1 percent increase compared to the same time last year, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

During August 2024, placements in feedlots totaled 1.98 million head, a slight decrease of 1 percent from 2023, with net placements at 1.92 million head. The breakdown of placements included 395,000 head of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds, 305,000 head weighing 600-699 pounds, 435,000 head at 700-799 pounds, 485,000 head at 800-899 pounds, 265,000 head at 900-999 pounds, and 90,000 head weighing 1,000 pounds or more.

Marketings of fed cattle in August totaled 1.82 million head, down 4 percent from the previous year, while other disappearance stood at 54,000 head, a 2 percent decrease compared to 2023.
