The Grain Elevator and Processing Society released Quality Management Systems for Bulk Materials Handling Operations, an on-demand training program that teaches participants how to use quality data, inventory records, inspections and regulatory documents to improve performance and reduce risk.
“Facilities collect an incredible amount of data every day,” said Carley Snider, GEAPS Learning and Development Manager. “This course shows learners how to use that information to make informed decisions, identify opportunities for improvement and support stronger operational outcomes.”
Practical application focus
The course targets facility managers, location managers, quality professionals, supervisors and administrative personnel responsible for quality-related decision-making. Rather than focus on theory, the training uses realistic scenarios, dashboards, reports and decision-making activities to build practical skills.
Learners explore how to structure an effective Quality Management System, evaluate procedures and documentation, interpret quality reports and performance trends, and apply QMS principles to real-world grain handling, storage and processing situations.
The program includes introduction videos on bioterrorism preparedness, regulatory compliance, inventory management, operational priorities and measuring the return on investment of a Quality Management System.
Course details and credentials
Participants have 12 weeks after registration to complete the course, which takes an estimated seven hours. The training is available through GEAPS Online Learning at $495 for members and $795 for non-members.
The course counts toward the Credential in Grain Operations Management, part of GEAPS’ broader credentialing program that never expires and requires no continuing education units to maintain.
Expert instructors
Three subject matter experts developed the course content. Dr. Gretchen A. Mosher, a professor in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University, directs the Grain Quality Testing Laboratory and teaches Total Quality Management. She has published more than 85 research articles and serves as incoming president for the Greater Iowa GEAPS Chapter.
Barb Grove brings decades of experience in grain handling, agribusiness and quality assurance. She served as GEAPS president in 2021-22 and chairman of the board in 2022-23, and sits on the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Grain Inspection Advisory Committee.
Bill Horton recently retired after 43 years in the grain industry, including roles as Quality Management Systems Director and Field Safety Manager. He worked extensively in training, auditing and writing procedures for continual improvement and served as a certified ISO 9001 auditor.
The course is part of GEAPS’ ongoing effort to provide accessible education that strengthens workforce development and operational excellence across the grain and grain processing industries.
