Drought is causing crops to wither on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border, prompting farmers to take the rare action of gathering wheat and barley stalks to sell as chaff.
According to a report at Apaclive.com, the bales provide much-needed feed for livestock operators struggling against pasture shortages and rising feed costs, and also indicate a lower grain harvest that could keep crop prices higher in the coming months.
Temperatures are expected to rise this week on the Great Plains, threatening dry farm fields.
“Producers have chosen to cut down small grain fields for hay rather than harvest them for grain, as there is not enough fodder for humans,” said Jeff Schaefer, president of the North Dakota Stockmen Association.
