USDA reports sharp decline in corn export sales

Wheat exports saw a significant surge despite a 36% drop in new sales.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released its latest export sales summary for the period ending August 29, 2024, highlighting key developments in the international agricultural market.

Wheat: Exporters reported net sales of 340,000 metric tons (MT) for the 2024/2025 marketing year, marking a 36 percent decrease from the previous week and a 17 percent decline from the four-week average. Major increases were noted for the Leeward and Windward Islands (58,500 MT), Mexico (51,800 MT), South Korea (35,000 MT), the Philippines (33,900 MT), and Ecuador (30,200 MT). The marketing-year high for exports reached 638,100 MT, up 11 percent from the previous week and 25 percent from the four-week average. Destinations included the Philippines (139,900 MT), Mexico (120,500 MT), Vietnam (66,000 MT), South Korea (53,000 MT), and Guatemala (37,800 MT).

Corn: Net sales reductions for the 2023/2024 marketing year totaled 173,100 MT, a notable decrease from previous reports. Key increases were for Mexico (46,500 MT), Japan (42,000 MT), Colombia (19,600 MT), El Salvador (14,000 MT), and Saudi Arabia (5,300 MT), though these were offset by reductions for unknown destinations (229,500 MT) and Spain (48,400 MT). For the 2024/2025 marketing year, net sales totaled 1,822,500 MT, primarily for Mexico (806,000 MT), unknown destinations (475,800 MT), and Colombia (207,500 MT). Exports amounted to 1,061,200 MT, with major destinations including Mexico (506,500 MT), Japan (211,600 MT), and Colombia (111,400 MT).

Barley: No net sales or exports were reported for the 2024/2025 marketing year.

Sorghum: Total net sales for 2023/2024 reached 62,000 MT, with China as the primary destination. For the 2024/2025 marketing year, net sales were 251,000 MT, also predominantly for China. Exports totaled 172,000 MT, up 50 percent from the previous week and 75 percent from the four-week average, with China as the main destination.

Rice: Net sales for the 2024/2025 marketing year were 40,700 MT, with notable purchases by Guatemala (15,000 MT) and Japan (13,000 MT). Exports totaled 31,000 MT, primarily to Colombia (7,000 MT), Haiti (6,000 MT), and South Korea (5,600 MT).

Soybeans: Net sales reductions for the 2023/2024 marketing year totaled 228,000 MT. Increases were noted for Indonesia (57,800 MT) and Colombia (6,300 MT), while reductions were significant for unknown destinations (173,400 MT) and China (101,800 MT). Net sales for 2024/2025 reached 1,658,700 MT, mainly for China (1,002,400 MT) and unknown destinations (474,200 MT). Exports amounted to 491,100 MT, with major buyers including China (199,500 MT) and Mexico (100,800 MT).

Soybean Cake and Meal: Net sales for 2023/2024 totaled 40,900 MT, with significant purchases by Mexico (13,300 MT) and Ecuador (8,700 MT). For 2024/2025, net sales were 434,700 MT, primarily for Colombia (132,500 MT) and unknown destinations (114,000 MT). Exports reached 198,200 MT, with major destinations including the Philippines (71,800 MT) and Colombia (40,300 MT).

Soybean Oil: Net sales for 2023/2024 totaled 1,900 MT, with increases for Mexico (1,400 MT). Total net sales for 2025/2026 were 3,300 MT, all for Canada. Exports were 2,300 MT, primarily to Mexico (2,100 MT) and Canada (200 MT).

Cotton: Net sales of Upland cotton for 2024/2025 totaled 207,500 running bales (RB), with key buyers including Pakistan (71,400 RB) and India (41,800 RB). Exports amounted to 164,100 RB, with major destinations being China (36,300 RB) and Pakistan (30,600 RB). Net sales of Pima cotton totaled 10,100 RB for 2024/2025, with significant sales to India (11,300 RB). Exports were 6,000 RB, primarily to Vietnam (2,600 RB) and India (1,400 RB).

Hides and Skins: Net sales for 2024 included 362,300 pieces, with increases for China (247,000 pieces) and Thailand (41,300 pieces). Exports totaled 379,900 pieces, with major destinations including China (278,400 pieces) and Mexico (39,000 pieces). Net sales of wet blues were 56,500 pieces, with notable purchases by Thailand (37,000 unsplit) and China (16,900 unsplit). Exports of wet blues were 130,600 pieces, with key markets including China (40,400 unsplit) and Italy (27,400 unsplit).

Beef: Net sales for 2024 totaled 16,500 MT, with increases for Japan (7,700 MT) and Taiwan (2,100 MT). Exports reached 14,900 MT, with major destinations including Japan (3,600 MT) and South Korea (3,200 MT).

Pork: Net sales for 2024 totaled 20,800 MT, with significant sales to Mexico (10,000 MT) and Colombia (1,900 MT). Exports amounted to 28,000 MT, with major destinations including Mexico (12,500 MT) and Japan (4,300 MT).
