Soybean exports increase but wheat and corn sales drop

Notable highlights include record rice exports to Mexico and Haiti, despite low sales, and strong demand for pork and hides.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has released its latest export sales highlights for the period of October 18-24, 2024, showing mixed results across various commodities.

Wheat: Net sales for the 2024/2025 marketing year totaled 411,400 metric tons (MT), marking a 23% decrease from the previous week and a 14% decline from the prior four-week average. Key sales included 169,900 MT to Mexico, 79,500 MT to the Philippines, and 60,400 MT to Indonesia. However, exports hit a marketing-year low of 244,400 MT, primarily directed towards the Philippines and Ecuador.

Corn: Corn exports saw a net sales total of 2,341,700 MT, a significant drop of 35% from the previous week but a 7% increase from the prior four-week average. Major buyers included unknown destinations (771,300 MT) and Mexico (596,000 MT). Total exports reached 788,000 MT, with significant shipments to Mexico and Colombia.

Sorghum and Barley: Sorghum net sales plummeted to 5,700 MT, a 92% decrease from the prior week, while barley saw net sales of 2,600 MT, primarily to Canada and South Korea.

Rice: Net sales for rice were notably low at 12,700 MT, down 81% from the previous week, although exports surged to a marketing-year high of 90,400 MT, mainly to Mexico and Haiti.

Soybeans: The soybean market showed strength with net sales of 2,273,300 MT, a 6% increase from the previous week. Exports remained robust at 2,445,200 MT, with China as the top destination.

Hides and Skins: There was an increase in net sales of hides and skins, totaling 393,900 pieces, primarily to China and South Korea.

Beef and Pork: Beef net sales reached 13,900 MT, while pork sales surged to 44,800 MT, reflecting strong demand, particularly from Mexico and China.
