Local authorities hire real estate firm to sell Horace, North Dakota, grain elevator

New strategy aims to find buyer for property after auction falls short of reserve price.

InForum's Ingrid Harbo reported that the Metro Flood Diversion Authority has contracted Horizon Real Estate Group to manage the sale of the Horace North Dakota, grain elevator site after a July auction failed to meet the $550,000 reserve price. The highest bid was $99,500, well below the 2023 appraisal value of over $1 million.

Justin Fisher, director of lands and compliance, said the move will help determine the true market value amid growing demand in Horace. The six-month exclusive agreement includes a 6% commission split between agents upon sale.

The property, owned by the Cass County Joint Water Resource District, was acquired to avoid building a railroad bridge for the $3.2 billion Fargo-Moorhead Area Diversion flood control project. Located in Horace’s downtown, the grain elevator is a historic landmark favored by residents in local planning discussions
