The Canadian Grain Commission has fully compensated producers for eligible claims of unpaid grain deliveries to Purely Canada Foods Corp., marking the largest payout in the history of the Safeguards for Grain Farmers Program.
The commission reviewed 78 eligible claims totaling over $17 million, resulting in 100% compensation to affected farmers from the company's security. This action follows the revocation of Purely Canada Foods Corp.'s grain dealer license and three primary elevator licenses on August 27, 2024.
David Hunt, Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Grain Commission, emphasized the program's importance, stating, "Our Safeguards for Grain Farmers Program plays a key role in securing payments for producers, and we are pleased to be able to provide 100% compensation for eligible claims."
The commission is also addressing multiple claims that fall outside the program's eligibility period, encouraging these producers to seek payment directly from the company.
Under the Safeguards program, licensed grain companies must provide security to cover outstanding grain liabilities. Producers are eligible for compensation within 90 days of grain delivery or 30 days from the issuance of a cash purchase ticket or cheque, whichever is less.
