WTTW's Patty Wetli reported that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has granted a key authorization for the demolition of Chicago's iconic Damen Silos, bringing the century-old structure one step closer to potential destruction. The massive grain elevators, unused since the 1970s but famous for their appearance in "Transformers: Age of Extinction," have long been a subject of debate between developers and preservationists.

Michael Tadin Jr., who purchased the 23-acre site in 2022 for $6.5 million, plans to demolish the silos in early 2025, pending final approval from Chicago's Department of Buildings. While Tadin initially proposed developing a "state-of-the-art headquarters" for his company MAT Limited Partnership, he now says plans for the site remain under consideration.

Preservationists, led by Ward Miller of Preservation Chicago, are making last-ditch efforts to save the structure. They propose repurposing the site for public use, potentially as grounds for major city festivals or as a venue similar to the Salt Shed. However, Miller expresses concern about the lack of engagement from city leadership in exploring alternatives.
