A new bulk agricultural marine terminal opened in Prince Edward County on Thursday, providing eastern Ontario farmers a closer delivery option for corn, wheat and soybean crops.
The facility, a partnership between Parrish & Heimbecker Limited and Picton Terminals by Doornekamp, will reduce travel time for local farmers and alleviate truck traffic on Highway 401.
“Our team is excited to partner with the Doornekamp Group, another family-owned business, as we build this new facility at Picton Terminals,” said John Heimbecker, CEO of Parrish & Heimbecker Limited. “The addition of Picton Terminals to our supply chain strategy will make it more economical for local farmers to bring their crops to global markets.”
P&H currently serves customers in 24 countries. The company announced construction of storage silos and receiving buildings in fall 2024, with operations beginning in 2026.
Representatives from the Chamber of Marine Commerce and Ontario Marine Council attended the opening.
Ben Doornekamp, CEO of H.R. Doornekamp Construction Ltd., said the project represents an investment in the next generation of farmers as Picton Terminals marks its first decade of port operations.
The facility is expected to create jobs and support economic growth in the region.
