Scoular has introduced a program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), offering financial incentives to soybean producers who adopt sustainable farming practices. This initiative is part of the USDA's Climate-Smart program.

The program rewards farmers in specific regions for implementing practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote carbon sequestration and improve soil health. Eligible practices include conservation crop rotation, no-till farming, cover cropping, nutrient management and reduced tillage.

Eric Kresin, General Manager in Scoular's Grain Division, emphasized the importance of sustainability, stating, "We are excited we can support producers in their sustainability efforts. This program highlights our commitment to building a more sustainable and resilient agricultural system for generations to come."

Scoular has already processed its first Climate-Smart soybeans at its advanced grain-cleaning facility in Andres, Illinois. The company plans to market these sustainably produced soybeans to brands and retailers, extending the sustainability benefits throughout the supply chain.

Jake Willrett, a sixth-generation farmer from Malta, Illinois, who participates in the program, shared his perspective: "I'm a steward of the land. It's my job to take care of it." While appreciating the financial incentives, Willrett emphasized that promoting sustainability is the program's most crucial aspect.

This Climate-Smart effort, officially known as the Transforming the Farmer to Consumer Supply Chain project, is funded through the USDA's Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities. It represents a collaborative effort between industry partners led by Carbon A List, aiming to transform agricultural practices for a more sustainable future.

The initiative not only benefits farmers but also contributes to Scoular's broader sustainability goals, which include trialing emissions-reduction technology and launching a regenerative agriculture pilot program. As the agricultural industry continues to evolve, programs like this pave the way for a more environmentally conscious and economically viable farming future.
