The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service released its latest Fats and Oils: Oilseed Crushings, Production, Consumption and Stocks report on June 2, revealing mixed trends in the oilseed processing industry for April 2025.
According to the report, soybean crushing in April totaled 6.07 million tons (202 million bushels), down from 6.20 million tons (207 million bushels) in March 2025. However, this figure represents a substantial increase from April 2024, when 5.33 million tons (178 million bushels) were crushed.
Crude oil production from soybeans reached 2.40 billion pounds in April, marking a 3% decrease from March but a significant 15% increase compared to April 2024. The production of once-refined soybean oil followed a similar pattern, with 1.75 billion pounds produced in April 2025. This represents a 7% decrease from March but a 2% increase from the previous year.
The report also highlighted trends in other oilseed markets. Canola seed crushing declined to 161,022 tons in April 2025, down from 200,953 tons in March and 188,515 tons in April 2024. Consequently, canola crude oil production decreased by 20% from March and 16% from the previous year, totaling 129 million pounds.
In the animal fats sector, the report noted increases in several categories. Edible tallow production rose to 88.3 million pounds, up 9% from March and 18% from April 2024. Choice white grease production also saw gains, reaching 105 million pounds, a 5% increase from March and a 7% increase year-over-year.
However, not all sectors experienced growth. Inedible tallow production declined to 306 million pounds, down 9% from March and 2% from the previous year. Technical tallow production also decreased, falling 8% from both the previous month and year to 116 million pounds.
These fluctuations in production levels across various fats and oils categories reflect the dynamic nature of the industry, influenced by factors such as crop yields, market demand, and processing capacities. The USDA's monthly reports provide crucial data for industry stakeholders to track trends and make informed decisions in this vital sector of the agricultural economy.
As the industry continues to evolve, processors and market analysts will closely monitor these production figures to gauge the health of the oilseed crushing and animal fats industries, as well as their potential impacts on related agricultural markets.
