Three staff members at the U.S. Grains & BioProducts Council transitioned to new roles this week, reflecting the organization’s continued growth in international markets and operational needs.
The Washington, D.C.-based promotions span global programming, trade strategies and administrative technology support as the Council expands its reach across multiple continents.
Freebairn takes on global ethanol programming
Emma Freebairn assumed the role of global ethanol programs manager, focusing on activities in Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. Freebairn joined the Council as an industry relations intern in 2023 before accepting a permanent position as manager of industry relations administration.
“We are very excited to add Emma’s expertise in logistics and planning, her solid work ethic and positive attitude to our team,” said Alicia Koch, USGBC director of global ethanol export development.
Redfern advances to global strategies position
Samantha Redfern took over as manager of global strategies and trade, where she will handle the Council’s barley programming and support the regional office for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Redfern joined the Council in 2024 as global ethanol program coordinator before serving as manager of global programs.
“I am looking forward to seeing Samantha work with the Council’s barley sector members and take ownership of the Council’s barley promotion portfolio,” said Kurt Shultz, USGBC senior director of global strategies.

Emily Schneider was promoted to manager of administration and technology, a newly created position supporting the Council’s growing international staff. Schneider joined the Council in 2020 as administrative assistant and receptionist, becoming industry relations coordinator in 2021.
