Russia is banning exports of hard wheat until May 31, 2024, in an effort to enhance food security and stabilize the price of durum wheat goods in the country.

According to reports, Russia is the world's largest wheat exporter, but its durum production and supplies are small. Russia's agriculture ministry proposed the measure last month.

Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed the order to enforce the ban, reported the Russian news agency Interfax.

The order provides for a number of exemptions from the ban, including hard wheat exports for international humanitarian aid and under international intergovernmental agreements, shipments to Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and grain shipped as provisions.

According to Interfax, the Russian Agriculture Ministry said worldwide hard wheat harvests have hit “20-year lows in most producing countries," causing demand for the products to jump.
