Cindy Falk retires after 40 years connecting Kansas wheat farmers with consumers

Falk’s career with Kansas Wheat Commission shaped wheat education, outreach and the national Festival of Breads.

After four decades of promoting wheat foods, home baking and science-based nutrition, Cindy Falk is retiring from the Kansas Wheat Commission, leaving behind a lasting legacy of education and consumer connection. Falk began her journey in 1985 as a volunteer spokesperson and grew into a full-time role dedicated to bridging the gap between Kansas wheat farmers and the public.

A key part of her work was contributing to the Kansas Wheat Commission recipe booklet, a staple resource since 1966, with Falk involved in 37 editions. Her efforts extended beyond Kansas through leadership with the Wheat Foods Council, where she championed accurate nutrition information amid shifting public perceptions and diet trends.

Raised on a wheat farm near Laclede, Kan., Falk brought a personal touch to her outreach, whether at the Kansas State Fair or welcoming international visitors to the test kitchen. “Consumers want to hear from the wheat farmer,” she said, emphasizing the importance of direct communication.

Falk also helped grow the Kansas Festival of Breads into the National Festival of Breads, the country’s only amateur yeast bread contest, turning bakers into wheat ambassadors through farm tours and hands-on experiences.

As she retires, Falk plans to focus on family, travel and community baking education, while her connection to the wheat industry remains strong. Fans can hear her story on the Feb. 3 episode of the Wheat’s On Your Mind podcast.
