Artist transforms historic North Dakota grain silos with massive mural

Former Union Silos in Minot, North Dakota become canvas for community identity in project costing $350,000.

The Associated Press' Jack Dura reported that an Australian artist Guido van Helten is transforming the Minot skyline as he paints a monumental mural on the former Union Silos.

Working 75 feet above ground from a boom lift, van Helten began the project in May, using mineral silicate paint that bonds with concrete.

The 38-year-old artist has created similar works worldwide, including on grain elevators throughout the U.S. Midwest.

“When you use these old structures to share stories and use them as a vehicle to carry an image of identity, it becomes part of the landscape,” van Helten said.

The 360-degree mural will reflect local culture with themes of land and ownership. The community-funded project has raised about 85% of its $350,000 cost.
