BNSF Railway officially opened its new intermodal facility in Salt Lake City on Thursday, marking a significant expansion of freight transportation infrastructure in the region.
Governor Spencer Cox joined legislative leaders and executives from BNSF, Patriot Rail and the Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA) for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the 43-acre site, located five miles from Salt Lake City International Airport.
“This new facility is an exciting opportunity to improve our capacity and efficiency as the industry’s intermodal leader, providing more flexible, competitive options for our customers,” said BNSF Executive Vice President Tom Williams.
The facility will support BNSF’s recently launched intermodal service between California and Salt Lake City. Patriot Rail will handle terminal operations and infrastructure support at the site.
Patriot Rail CEO Brandy Christian described the project as reflecting “our shared commitment to smart, scalable infrastructure” that positions Utah for “long-term success in the global logistics arena.”
UIPA Board Chair Abby Osborne called the development “a game changer for Utah’s economy” that will create new opportunities for local manufacturers and shippers while advancing the state’s vision to become a leader in resilient, efficient logistics.
