U.S.-based grain merchant ADM is closing its pet food manufacturing plant in Brazil as part of broader cost-cutting and operational streamlining efforts, according to a report from Reuters. The company informed workers at the facility on July 15 that operations would continue for another 90 days before shuttering.

ADM noted its Tres Corações facility and related businesses no longer align with future operational needs after exploring various alternatives. Sources familiar with the matter told Reuters the company unsuccessfully attempted to sell the unit for approximately one year before deciding to close it.

The closure comes as ADM implements a major restructuring plan announced in February which includes cutting hundreds of jobs and reducing costs by $500 million to $750 million over the next three to five years. This initiative followed the company's lowest fourth-quarter adjusted profit in six years.

According to Reuters, the Tres Corações plant, acquired by ADM in 2019, employed over 900 workers and had an annual production capacity of approximately 525,000 tons of pet food products. ADM's nutrition division, which includes this facility, represents the smallest of the company's three business units and was at the center of an accounting investigation in 2024.

Despite this closure, ADM will continue operating one animal nutrition products factory in Brazil, located in São Paulo. In April 2025, ADM opened its first wet pet food manufacturing facility in Mexico, located in Yecapixtla, Morelos.

According to Petfood Industry's Top Pet Food Companies, ADM Animal Nutrition, a division of Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), specializes in pet food production, offering a range of products including dry and wet formulations for dogs and cats. Leveraging ADM's expertise in agricultural processing and nutrition, the division focuses on delivering science-based pet food solutions.
