California Senate unanimously approves E15 fuel legislation

Bill to legalize lower-cost, cleaner fuel option heads to Gov. Newsom's desk.

California is one step away from legalizing E15 fuel after the state Senate voted 39-0 Monday to pass Assembly Bill 30, sending the legislation to Gov. Gavin Newsom for final approval.

The bill would immediately legalize E15 upon receiving the governor's signature, ending California's status as the only state in the nation that doesn't allow sales of the ethanol blend.

"With today's passage of AB30, California is taking a big step toward lower gas prices and a cleaner, more sustainable future for families across the state," said Geoff Cooper, president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association.

Studies indicate E15 could save California drivers $2.7 billion annually, or about $200 per household, while reducing emissions that contribute to smog.

"California's regulatory agencies have reviewed the E15 gasoline blend for nearly eight years and have yet to issue any rulings," said Assemblymember David Alvarez, one of the bill's sponsors. "This unnecessary holdup has prevented California's drivers from accessing a cleaner, more affordable fuel option."

Newsom previously expressed support for E15, stating last year that it has "massive potential" to lower gas prices "while keeping our air clean."

The Renewable Fuels Association has begun hosting educational workshops for California fuel marketers interested in offering E15.
