A new environmental footprinting feature within Sustell® was announced Tuesday by dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, allowing users to calculate end-to-end environmental impacts using their own farm production data.

The development addresses growing demands for sustainability reporting and supply chain transparency in food and agriculture sectors. Many environmental assessments still depend on generic datasets and industry averages, but companies increasingly need more accurate ways to measure and show the results of their sustainability programs.

Crop production contributes significantly to feed and farm footprints, yet generic emission factors often miss the specific conditions of individual supply chains. The ability to incorporate primary crop production data helps close this gap, offering a more representative view of environmental performance across the animal protein value chain.

Sustell® users can now integrate primary crop production data directly into feed formulations and animal farm footprint calculations. This creates a connected approach to environmental measurement, ensuring that crop production impacts are tracked accurately and transparently throughout the animal protein chain.

The new feature supports Forests, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) reporting, letting companies incorporate primary crop and ingredient data into FLAG-aligned environmental assessments. This helps organizations improve the accuracy, transparency and credibility of sustainability reporting while meeting Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) requirements.

The capability provides greater visibility into environmental impacts, helping organizations identify environmental hotspots, improve decision-making and meet sustainability reporting requirements. It also helps companies respond to growing customer, retailer and supply chain demands for credible environmental data and greater transparency across agricultural value chains.

Sustell® is the world’s leading ISO-assured animal protein footprinting platform, supporting comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) across crop production, feed manufacturing, animal production and processing.

Dr. David Nickell, global head of sustainability at dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, said: “Many sustainability assessments still rely on average crop data. By enabling companies to use their own production data, Sustell® helps turn environmental measurement from an estimation exercise into a more accurate representation of real-world performance.”
