North Carolina State University and Railinc have launched a partnership to use big data analysis to enhance rail freight usage in supply chains. The initiative focuses on identifying opportunities to shift long-haul shipments from trucks to rail, which could reduce highway congestion, lower shipping costs, and decrease environmental emissions.
“The rail industry has made tremendous progress improving freight efficiency over the years,” said Railinc CEO Allen West. NC State’s Dr. George List noted that even a 2% shift from truck to rail could significantly boost intermodal rail tonnage and justify infrastructure investments.
The research builds on NC State’s recent work analyzing modal demands across sectors and aims to provide actionable insights for industry leaders and policymakers. Dr. Daniel J. Findley, associate director at NC State’s Institute for Transportation Research and Education, emphasized rail’s advantages in cost, capacity, and sustainability.
This collaboration marks the start of a broader partnership, including future research projects, student involvement, and workforce development, supporting more resilient supply chains and stronger communities.
