ABB has expanded its Baldor-Reliance SP4 motor line with a new variant featuring integrated shaft grounding technology designed specifically for variable speed drive applications.
The new motors, which represent the fourth phase of the SP4 platform rollout, provide protection against electrical discharge damage to bearings, extending motor life and reducing downtime. ABB describes the combination of NEMA Super Premium efficiency with advanced bearing protection in a rolled steel frame as an industry first.
"Operators shouldn't have to choose between high efficiency and bearing protection," said Brandon Canclini, Global Product Manager at ABB. "ABB's SP4 shaft-grounded motors deliver both in one reliable, cost-effective solution."
The motors achieve IE4 efficiency levels without magnets or rare earth materials, reducing energy consumption by as much as 20% compared to standard motors. They are available in multiple configurations, including 2, 4 and 6 pole versions in various power ranges and enclosure types.
Launched in 2024, the SP4 product line now includes four variants: cast iron severe duty, rolled steel open drip proof, rolled steel totally enclosed fan cooled, and the new shaft-grounded model. All come with a four-year warranty.
ABB notes that the motors are particularly suitable for HVACR systems, pumping applications, manufacturing facilities, and variable speed drive applications where bearing current damage is a risk.
